The kid with potential is ready to make his mark on the world stage. First sprang to prominence when he won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in Sydney in 1996 and followed up two years later with another bronze medal at a major championship at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.
The progression continued at last year’s world titles in Spain when he placed seventh in the 20km road walk. Based on that result, Deakes has strong claims as a medal prospect in Sydney. Fellow Aussie Nick O’Hearn finished fourth in Atlanta and with Deakes now Australia’s No. 1, he must be a chance. Deakes will also walk in the 50km.
